As Ethics Committee Probes Ties To K Street Fixer And Special Interest Senator Ducks Questions, New Television Spot Raises Questions About Coleman’s Ethical Lapses

Saint Paul [08/06/08] – The Al Franken for U.S. Senate campaign today released a new television ad, “Who Does Norm Work For? (Vol. 1)” that answers a recent personal attack issued by the campaign of Senator Norm Coleman (R – Big Oil) and lays out the troubling facts about one of Coleman’s ethical lapses.

Al and Franni Franken paid state and federal taxes on every cent of their income.

Communications Director Andy Barr:

“Norm Coleman is attacking Al Franken for an honest mistake he made with his personal finances – and fixed months ago. Meanwhile, Coleman is refusing to answer questions about a sweetheart deal he received from a Washington insider connected to powerful lobbyists – a matter that has already attracted the attention of the Senate Ethics Committee. Unfortunately, this is just one example of Norm Coleman’s all-too-cozy relationship with special interests – a relationship that, for him, comes before doing the job for Minnesota’s middle class families. We know that Norm Coleman isn’t working for Minnesotans in Washington. Now it’s time to find out just who he is working for – and what he’s getting in return.”

A short list of questions Coleman won’t answer about his sweetheart rent deal:

  1. Who pays the utilities?
  2. Where’s the lease?
  3. What comparable apartments and rent prices were used to determine the $600 rent?
  4. Did Coleman pay a security deposit?
  5. What FLS-Connect business is conducted in Coleman’s apartment?

Al Franken: “I’m Al Franken and I approve this message.”

Announcer: “Al Franken. He gave speeches across the country. Instead of paying taxes in the states where he spoke, he overpaid taxes to the state where he lived. It was an honest mistake. And Norm Coleman? Coleman is being investigated for paying only six hundred dollars a month rent to live in a million dollar DC home owned by a Washington insider connected to powerful lobbyists. And it gets even worse. Stay tuned for more.”
