After Erasing Poll Gap During Summer, DFL-Endorsed Candidate Enters Home Stretch With Nearly $2.4 Million In Bank

Saint Paul [08/28/08] – The Al Franken for U.S. Senate campaign today announced that, with an average contribution of just $57, it raised nearly $1.4 million during the pre-primary period between July 1 and August 20, out-raising the campaign of Sen. Norm Coleman (R – Big Oil).

Communications Director Andy Barr:

“We’ve said all along that we’d be outspent in this campaign – but this summer, we defined the race: Norm Coleman as the candidate of the status quo, Al Franken as the candidate of change. Coleman has had more in the bank than us since the very beginning – and we’re sure he will until the very end – but the momentum has clearly turned in our direction. Thanks to small-dollar contributions from hard-working men and women, we’ve proven that you don’t need to sell out to Big Oil to run a strong campaign. And thanks to over 110,000 grassroots donors, we’ve ensured that we’ll have the resources to continue spreading our message through Election Day.”

The campaign will report nearly $2.4 million cash on hand. During the pre-primary period, over 6,500 new donors made their first contribution to the campaign.

The most recent public poll, performed by Minnesota Public Radio and the University of Minnesota, shows that Franken has erased a deficit of between 7 and 10 points and taken a one-point lead in the race.
