AS CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCES NEW EFFORT TO MOBILIZE SENIORS, FRANKEN RELEASES NEW AD PROMISING TO DEFEND SOCIAL SECURITY
In “Important,” Franken Tells Wife Franni’s Social Security Story, Criticizes Bush and Coleman’s Attempts To End Program
DFL Candidate: “I Know How Important Social Security Is To Every American Family”
Saint Paul [09/12/08] – The Al Franken for Senate campaign today released a new statewide television spot, “Important,” in which Al Franken explains why he takes his commitment to protecting Social Security so seriously.
Communications Director Andy Barr:
“Al takes the issues seriously. But this one, he takes personally. In Washington, he’ll stand up to people like Norm Coleman who want to end Social Security as we know it – because it’s as important to his family as it is to the many Minnesotans who rely on this important program.”
In the ad, Franken explains that his wife’s family was saved by Social Security survivor benefits after the death of her father, criticizes attempts by George Bush and Norm Coleman to privatize the program, and commits to defending it from such attempts in the Senate.
The ad comes as the campaign launches a new Seniors for Franken program designed to organize and mobilize seniors.

SCRIPT
AL FRANKEN: When my wife, Franni, was seventeen months old, her dad died, leaving her mom widowed with five little kids. They never would have made it without Social Security survivor benefits. I always think about Franni’s family when politicians like George Bush and Norm Coleman talk about risking Social Security in the stock market. I will fight any attempt to privatize Social Security. I’m Al Franken, and I approve this message, because I know how important Social Security is to every American family.
