Franni and Congressman Sabo Talk Social Security
Posted in Blog, News Clips on September 19th, 2008
On Friday, Franni and former Congressman Martin Sabo held a roundtable at a St. Paul coffee shop with five Minnesota seniors to talk about the importance of Social Security. Protecting Social Security is near and dear to Al and Franni because Franni’s family survived on Social Security survivor benefits after the death of her father. It’s something Al has talked about on the trail and also in our TV ad, “Important.”
More on Al’s proposals to stand up for Minnesota seniors from the Rochester Post-Bulletin, after Al’s visit to Rochester for Seniors for Franken:

DFL senatorial candidate Al Franken on Monday pledged to a group of senior citizens in Rochester to keep Social Security financially secure, and said he would reject any plan to take money out of the program to invest in private accounts.
Franken contrasted his position with that of GOP Sen. Norm Coleman, who supported allowing workers to divert a portion of the Social Security contributions to individual accounts. That proposal, advocated by President Bush early in his second term, eventually died due to a lack of support from both parties.
Franken argued that if that position had been allowed to prevail, it would have meant disaster for such workers, because those dollars would have been tied up in the kind of AAA-rated securities that have brought down Bear Stearns, and now Lehman Brothers.
“My first pledge and commitment is to keep Social Security secure and solid — keep the security in Social Security,” Franken told two dozen senior citizens at the Shoreview Commons assisted living community in southwest Rochester.
