Helping More Minnesotans Go To College

TeamFranken headed to St. Cloud State University yesterday, where Al spoke about his idea for a $5000 college tuition tax credit so that Minnesota’s middle class families can help their kids pay for college.
From the St. Cloud Times:
Mike Sullivan has some experience paying for college. So does Ryan Birkman.
On Tuesday, the two Democrats – one a St. Cloud father of seven children and the other a St. Cloud State University senior – joined Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken at St. Cloud State’s Atwood Memorial Center to boost Franken’s middle class higher education tax credit plan.
“What kind of outcomes do we want from college?” asked Sullivan, who said five of his children have graduated from college and two more are currently enrolled. “And what kind of burden do we want them to have to bear to get quality education?”
Franken’s answer to an average student debt, which has nearly reached $20,000 nationally, is a $5,000-per-student tax credit for families earning up to $200,000 a year. It would be paid for by eliminating Bush administration tax cuts on families earning more than $1 million per year.
“(My wife) Frannie and I were lucky to be able to provide that opportunity for our kids, and I want every Minnesotan to be able to do that, too,” Franken said.
…
But Coleman has also voted to cut student aid and eliminate tuition tax deductions in the last two Bush administration budget bills, Franken said.
“He cast the deciding vote for a Bush budget with the single-largest student aid cut in U.S. history,” Franken said of Coleman.
