The Fond du Lac Reservation is receiving a $429,900 federal grant to help prevent and treat diabetes.

The Health and Human Services grant will go to community directed programs that incorporate a wide range of proven diabetes treatment and prevention strategies, such as patient education, quality diabetes care services, as well as physical, nutrition, and weight loss activities, U.S. Sen. Al Franken’s office announced today.

According to the Indian Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Indian adults suffer diabetes at twice the rate of the general population. And diabetes is killing American Indians and Alaska Natives at a rate four times greater than the general population.
